Birth of Connor
​(as told by his mother)

Admitted at 16:00, I was 4cm dilated; my nurse asked if I wanted a birthing ball. Surprised, I said yes, I had no idea they had one of them, let alone offer them at that hospital.

I spent the first hours on the birthing ball. My surges were starting to get really strong at this point and one of the machines I was hooked to actually displayed a numerical value of the surge intensity. Mine had started around 60-100. As the number rose around the 30’s I would start to feel it, I would then start my breathing and ask my husband to press on my back for counter-pressure. So basically, my baby was pressing from the inside and my husband from the outside while I breathed and went into total relaxation.

 I did not feel much with all this in play. We conversed a little in between. I started feeling nauseated. Chick-fil-A for breakfast was/is not a good idea. I also had to go to the restroom quite a bit. Eventually I decided to go to bed and do my relaxation there. My water broke at the same time I was thinking of getting into the tub; it just trickled. The nurse said, “no”, when I asked if I could get into the tub, which was understandable at this point.

Shift change happened but I did not really engage in this since I was still trying to relax through the surges. The oncoming nurse asked to check me, which irritated me a little since I was in the perfect position. She said I was 7cm and left.

We continued our relaxation.  Music playing in the back ground, me breathing. If I felt a strong one coming, I would ask my husband to put pressure on my leg, so I could concentrate on that pressure point while breathing. I started getting really hot one minute and cold the next. It was almost like someone was playing with the AC and heater, on, off, on, off. My husband would cover me up, and then uncover me the next minute.

All of a sudden I had to go to the bathroom again but this time, no one believed me. Everyone insisted it was the baby and at this point the doctor had arrived. Stirrups were brought in, the room got full in less than a second from people I had never met before but were there for the birth. It ended up being hospital staff. Legs up, I was instructed to hold my breath and push. At this very moment I was confused, how was I supposed to explain to these people about the NER (natural expulsive reflex)? Birth breathing? And not wanting to tear? Lights were on bright; it was time to finally meet my child. I tried breathing but the “push” shouts got louder, so I decided to go with that especially since the doctor said that if I did not start pushing, he would “have decelerations.”

I requested a mirror to see if I could see the head, I could not. With the next surge I pushed the way I was instructed, took a breath, pushed again, another breath, another push and next thing I know something flopped onto my belly. I let out a scream then asked, “What was that?” because my eyes were closed. The doctor replied calmly, “Your baby, it is your baby.”

I opened my eyes and there he was. My gorgeous baby boy was quietly laying on me with his eyes wide open. Wow! It was a miracle and I was part of it and so was my husband. I gave him a million kisses because finally, I had met the child that woke me up every morning if I slept past a certain time. I apologized a million times for almost causing him to have decelerations. Even though now that I think about it, she said that to get me to push, nice trick but it worked.

The child that startled awake to his dad’s 6am alarm clock was here, his startle would then startle me and there we were, awake as a family. My son was born at 19:24. It seemed like hours had gone by but in reality, it was only 3 and a half hours since admission. I have one regret on this birthing journey, I pushed. Luckily my one degree tear healed very fast, within a week. Next time, I will know exactly how to handle that pressure, lesson learned.

First time mom and super proud of what my husband and I were able to accomplish with the help of God and HypnoBirthing.
